Placemaking Week Tamaki Makaurau sees a series of community-led activations happening in public spaces across Auckland from 12th to 21st October 2018.
This is the first time Placemaking Week has happened in Tamaki Makaurau. The idea is to have a week based on Project for Public Spaces’ Lighter, Quicker Cheaper principles that is focused on placemaking in ways that matter to local people, involve them and are fun!
Placemaking Week is a great opportunity to showcase and add to the great work that is currently happening across the city. It also helps foster local conversations about the future of our places and how local people can shape them as well as building a community of placemakers across the city who want to make Tamaki Makaurau a better place to live.
The team at Placemaking Week Tamaki Makaurau is here to support local placemakers to create an activation to be installed during Placemaking Week. We do this through our Community Placemaking Kit and by hosting events to support development of skills and connections of those involved as well as providing a map of the activations we know that are happening.
During Placemaking Week, we will also host international and local experts for evening of talks and a panel discussion on community-led placemaking.
You can get involved in a number of ways:
Sign up as a Place Leader to receive a kit and create an activation during Placemaking Week
Join an existing team and bring your skills and resources to an activation already being developed
Visit an activation and let us know what you think
Placemaking Week Tamaki Makaurau is produced by Catalyse Network, Fresh Concept, The Open Fort and Panuku in conjunction with Project for Public Spaces. It’s the first time for us too and we’ll be learning as we go so we can do it even better next year!

What is an Activation?
Any activity or infrastructure that enriches the space, making it more alive and people friendly. Activating is about making spaces inclusive, memorable, unified, innovative and entrepreneurial. Most activations are either physical (e.g. art, installations and community resources) or events (e.g. street theatre, music and food).
What is Placemaking?
“Placemaking inspires people to collectively reimagine and reinvent public spaces as the heart of every community. Strengthening the connection between people and the places they share, Placemaking refers to a collaborative process by which we can shape our public realm in order to maximize shared value. More than just promoting better urban design, Placemaking facilitates creative patterns of use, paying particular attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities that define a place and support its ongoing evolution.” From Project For Public Spaces
